(MyHostNews.com) VeriSign, the leading provider of Internet infrastructure services for the networked world, released its 3rd quarter 2007 Domain Name Industry Brief. The results showed that 12 million new domain names were added over the past quarter, ending with a total base of 146 million domain name registrations worldwide across all Top Level Domain names (TLDs). That’s a 31% increase over the same quarter last year.

Country Code TLD (ccTLD) showed a 38% increase over the same quarter last year with .cn (China) seeing the largest growth at 20% and .ru (Russian Confederation) seeing the second greatest growth at 12% quarter over quarter. The largest ccTLD continues to be .de (Germany) with .cn and .uk following. These three ccTLDs make up 45% of the entire ccTLD base.

The Brief highlights the importance of providing a way for people of all languages to navigate the Internet through the use of Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs). IDNs are domain names represented by local language characters, such as Japanese Kanji symbols, rather than the ASCII letters and numbers used in English and most European languages. With an IDN, a domain name will use a local language characters and follow it with a common ASCII TLD, such as .com or .net. VeriSign recently conducted a quantitative research study in China and South Korea to gauge the interest and need for IDNs. Results showed that more than 67% of businesses and 62% of consumers in China strongly agree with the importance of a Web address that is the same no matter where the Internet user is located.

During the quarter, VeriSign processed a peak of nearly 32 billion Domain Name System (DNS) queries per day, with each query representing an instance of an Internet user accessing a Web site or sending email.  The VeriSign DNS continued to maintain 100 percent operational accuracy and stability during the third quarter of 2007, just as it has for the past nine years.
