(MyHostNews.com) SoftLayer, the industry’s fastest growing web hosting service provider, announced the launch of a new Seattle datacenter location along with groundbreaking cross- datacenter capabilities.
SoftLayer customers will now be able to select the geographical location of their server deployment in real time, an industry first. “You can choose whether you server is installed in Dallas, Seattle, or first available, right as you’re ordering it. And the ability to choose your location is free of charge,” said Steven Canale, SoftLayer Vice President of Sales. “It’s part of our strategy to give customers more control.”
SoftLayer has also created the industry’s first cross-datacenter virtualization solution that lets customers purchase servers in different geographic locations and put them into a “Virtual Dedicated Rack” (VDR). “Imagine a VDR with two servers in Dallas, five in Seattle, and bandwidth pooled across both datacenters. Any server can utilize either location’s local services via our private 10g connection between datacenters,” said Mr. Canale. “This is just the beginning of our cross- datacenter virtualization strategy to help customers maximize efficiency and lower overall costs.”
The company’s new Seattle location has an initial 1000 servers ready for immediate delivery. SoftLayer’s advanced inventory management system synchronizes real-time inventory levels across locations with the company’s server signup forms. The servers are identical to those offered in its Dallas location, including newer Intel Harpertown processor servers. Their rack-mounted, hot-swappable enterprise servers allow for substantial and easy upgrades.
“Our customers can upgrade from a single-processor Woodcrest to a dual-processor, quad-core Harpertown without switching chassis, including the upgrade from SATA to SAS or utilizing a combination of both drive technologies,” said Mr. Canale. “We want to make migrations as easy as possible. Our long term goal is to continue bringing enterprise service to the masses.”
